"Forum changes"

Grokster has been experiencing an excessive amount of posts recently in direct violation of the Forum Posting Rules that each user has agreed to when they registered for the forums. The Forum Posting Rules are necessary for the protection of the users as well as Grokster. While this has come primarily from new users, the volume of it has grown to the point that we are compelled to act. The two main problems have been inappropriate posts and attacks of a personal nature using the email/instant messaging features of the Forum Profiles.
In order to preserve the primary function of the Forums as a place to obtain help and support with the Grokster program, we have had to make the following changes:

All posts will now be screened after they are submitted for failure to meet the Forum Posting Rules. Any posts in violation will be deleted or edited as appropriate before they can actually be viewed on the Forums. This will cause a time delay of minutes to hours before the posts are viewable by all users.

All profile features of the Forums will be disabled. Please do not include your email address or instant messaging address in your post unless you are prepared to deal with whatever is sent to you.

It is unfortunate that we have had to resort to these measures, but they seem the only way to make sure that the Forums remain useful, civil and legal.

:ND: That's a good word for those little devils! :BL:

Music City applied prescreening of posts also on their board for a period of time after they had shut down their OpenNap cluster and switched over to Morpheus, causing some heavy protesting from the OpenNap proponents. Prescreening is an effective way to get the active posters - good and bad - to leave the board.

It's also a very effective means of eliminating the high spirit of the board in general, it prevents the free flow of ideas and community spirit so important to any discussion board and also tends to promote hostilities between the users, those being editted and the editors themselves.

Yep - sounds like the "SOS different day" scenario hard at work to me.

Censorship will always fail.
Just because you have silenced someone doesn't mean you have changed them or anything for that matter.
Censorship is weak.

But it KILLS the community spirit!

Censorship is weak.

When the spirit's dead it forces peeps to find or establish other communities elsewhere. That's not a bad thing, it's just not a really good thing either.

It generally speaks volumes about the atmosphere of a place in general............yuck.

the bug forum's been closed (there was some serious editing there!) and they're into heavy editing now in general as noted but as usual, they're editing comments that are embarrassing to the company, not necessarily the community. and nothing loses customers faster than corporate manipulation of the truth. they always say "we provide these forums at great expense etc for the benefit of all the users" (bless 'em. as if we buy they're so selfless, that it doesn't have everything to do with pr!) and then the inside users rant "if you don't like it here, start your own board".

well, we didn't like it guys so we did.

and here we are. and here. and here. and here. and here...

thanks for the great idea!:tu:

music city.com all over again ...

Same pattern.

Same result.

No boards.

However, in their defense they are trying to run a corporation that remains within the law of most western nations. They do need to do this otherwise it basically allows the service to become an infringing service in a matter of days.
