Xolox lives again

The writers of xolox may have chosen to disable it, but it's now alive and kicking.

First of all, you may well ned to reinstall the original. (I removed mine in a fit of temper).

You can find it via www.tucows.com

or here http://xenomorph.net/xlx/xolox112.exe

There is also a crack here, which re-enables it's download functions.

http://xenomorph.net/xlx/xdn_xolox.zip

All you have to do is unzip the file, and save it to program files\xolox - overwrite the original file.

I've tested it, it works...I also virus checked it using CA's Innoculate (dec 06 2001 update)

Thank you napgirl for providing the information and also for taking the trouble to test the crack for us! :tu:

Piece of Cake do-it-yourself patch:

Find your hosts file. On windows 9x it is usually c:\windows\hosts and on windows nt and windows 2000 it is usually c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (location may vary but you can use "search/find files/folders" on the start button to find the file 'hosts' with no extension).

Once you locate the file, open in Notepad & add the line below (all on one line by itself):

255.255.255.255 www.xolox.nl

and save changes.

Then, close Notepad, exit, and restart xolox. This change keeps windows from being able to find www.xolox.nl, allowing the software to work fully and normally. No need to uninstall/reinstall.

Have done this and it works perfectly.

Sssssh. That'd make both the guys who spent time and effort using a hex editor on the main executable feel really stooooooopid.

:)

Perhaps.. They probably ought to have checked, after all subverting DNS (which is what their technique amounts to) is fairly common.

Cracking the exe does mean theres no possible fallout from a failed lookup, which they *might* just have treated as a terminal error

As one of the guys (and I'm sure there were more than two) who "spent time and effort using a hex editor", I don't feel that I've wasted my time. After all, I can still access the xolox.com website. And I don't think I spent significantly more time modifying the executable then I would have spent changing my hosts file. A simple modification to a string was all that was needed; no changes to the program's logic were required.

A guy has made some minor modifications to Xolox and called it v1.15.
