a new development in spoofing music files - READ

i dl'd Eminem - white America. It was a loop, so i figured i'd edit the kazaa details to warn everyone else. HOWEVER, when i looked for the file in the 'My Kazaa Lite' tab of Kazaa (the one next to 'Theater'), the particular mp3 was nowhere to be seen! In this way, RIAA/their hos have made it impossible for people to warn others: with the result that this looped version of White America was listed by kazaa search results as being the most popular (shared by 72 users).

obviously, I succeded with my second download. But has anyone else seen this tactic? I think I was using KL2.00 at the time (I now use 2,02).

was it in explorer?

yeah - and it wasn't read-only or anything. it was successfully DLd into my shared folder, but it wouldnt appear in the My KAzaa tab. try it for yourself - its the 5,215kb version, at 128kbps.

theknife 09-02-03 05:06 PM

ok, i'm a little confused - why bother to edit it? why not just delete it so you are not throwing a bad version back into the pool?

i don't like the sound of that. it reminds me of the early days of morpheus when all kinds of bizarre things were happening. ft has it's own titling system so it may not be that big a deal but still i'd take theknife's advice and delete.

i'd run a virus scan scan too plus spybot & thecleaner to be on the safe side.

omg.....jack....how i remeber those days @ morpheus.
could swear i had a "ghost in the machine".
that's pretty freaky, eagle.
but i don't understand the technology/skill that it would take to do such a thing.
can anyone explain this?

Just delete it. Keep bad files off p2p.

thats not the point - the point is that most people DL the file with the most sources, and this may need to change.

That is my point. If ppl screen what they d/l, then find a bad file and delete it, then there would be less chance to d/l a cuckoo egg. I don't think that you can completely stop ppl from sharing eggs without some compromise network-wise or some major protocol change in a piece of software. Its like trying to stop leeching on p2p. The changes and counter-changes only make the effort more trouble than its worth.

true.

the sig link/hash file system works pretty well to keep out bad files but it's very limiting in that it only allows sharing of the exact same version.

it would be kind of fun to see some talented mixer take some of the spoofs and edit them into a remix - and then throw the remix back out there for sharing:)

Eminem by far gives me the most trouble on WinMX, the program that I use. I have two slots open and I'll get two people uploading an Eminem song from me at .13 KB/second. I sometimes wonder if it's actually the RIAA trying to congest my upload slots. In any case, they can take Eminem and put all the cuckoo eggs in it they want to; it might make the songs better. Those 72 people sharing those files may think of the damaged files as an improvement, you know.
