Is Flea the Best Slap Bassist?
 

Flea (RHCP) is one of the greatest bassists of all time. He has the most talent of any other bassist. Do u agree or disagree?

Yeah, him and Les Claypool are a couple of the best there are. But then they're also pretty showy. I have more respect for bassists that compliment the other instruments in the band so well you almost don't notice them. Stu Hamm from Joe Satriani's band would be a good example, though he doesn't slap his bass. And Justin Chancellor along with Danny Carey of Tool form one of the tightest rhythm sections I've heard in any band.

Slap bass is best suited for funk music, and anywhere else it's kinda gimicky, in my opinion.

Flea is great, but IMO its Jack Bruce. Listen to the bass in the middle of the song Crossroads by Cream.

One of hte best bass players i have heard (other than myself...lol) has to be Dave Schools from Widespread Panic, the man is just SICK!!!!

If you want flashy, try Marcus Miller or Jaco Pastorius. Both of these guys can be compared to Steve Vai and Joe Satriani for total instrument pwnage!!

Slap is a pretty tough style to master...I can barely do it...i play mostly with a pick. Maybe some of the older Funk bands would suit your slap style of bass...

Slap should be just part of what a good bass player can do well. The bass players who impress me the most are Less Claypool followed by Geddy Lee. Flea is great - but not the best. Jack Bruce was a true pioneer, but like many artists of his day, he was following in the footsteps of better blues and jazz musicians from a prior era.

There are so many bass players worthy of mention historically, it's not even funny.

The Flea is good but U are also forgetting Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, and most of all Stanley clark and Larry Grahm :AP: :bc:

for all of his crying and bawling over the lastest RHCP album getting shared on the networks ,I bet it's doing just as good as any of their other albums..if not better because of the exposure

The best slap bassists begin with Larry Graham, Louis Johnson and Bootsy Collins and later, Doug Wimbish and Gary Grainger. Never liked what the white boys did with it, like Stu Hamm. Flea doesn't hold a candle to any of them.
