Formerly known as the SSSCA

This is probably in the Underground already but as I don't really browse there....

1) (old news) The SSSCA has been renamed to the CBDTPA "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act." To quote Infoanarchy, "this will help other Senators "forget" all those emails they have received about the SSSCA, I'm sure."

2) You can speak your mind about it to the evil gov people themselves at http://judiciary.senate.gov/special/input_form.cfm - at the time I'm posting this I think they will be quite swamped with comments by tomorrow as I notice no new ones get posted (methinks they are screened first).

I'm a bit worried this one might pass Congress. Worse, Diane Feinstein (D-CA) is one of the sponsors of this one. I hope you Cali folks remember this next time she runs.

Here's how to contact these people who are sponsoring the bill with your displeasure if you live in the following areas; they will only really care about your opinion if you live in the state though; and a letter or phone call will go way further then an email:

CALIFORNIA
Dianne Feinstein - http://feinstein.senate.gov/contact.html

SOUTH CAROLINA
Fritzz Hollings - http://www.senate.gov/~hollings/webform.html

ALASKA
Ted Stevens - http://www.senate.gov/~stevens/

HAWAII
Daniel Inouye - http://www.senate.gov/~inouye/abtform.html

LOUISIANA
http://www.senate.gov/~breaux/contact.html

I've contacted both my Senators to note my extreme displeasure with this bill. Whatever; I figured I at least had to try.

That's the Wired article on this Bill in case you don't know what's at risk. :)

thanks assorted. we're all watching with interest how a republic practices big money democracy, when those involved are uneasy about a law that benefits a few narrow interests - while severely restricting the peoples' rights. don't change the bill, just change the bills' controversial name to something less orwellien and hope for a sympathetic reception.

meanwhile, we shake our heads with scorn as countries like cuba restrict access to the internet or ban pc sales entirely. “never happen here” americans say with pride, while people we trust are working to achieve the same thing.

when the only things i can do with my pc are what the gov't "lets me", i'd rather do something with my time that's more fulfilling, like working on getting these out of touch and corrupted individuals thrown out of office!

I've contacted my elected officials about the SSSCA. I'll now do the same with the CBDTPA.
