sharing files in WinMX
I have my WinMX application set up to share files, but I have noticed that although users are logging on to my uploads, they do not seem to connect - which I fear might give the impression that I am not sharing - on each occasion, they time out. I am using Sygate Pro personal firewall. What settings should I change, in either MX or Sygate, to ensure that other users can access my files, please?

Perhaps you have to do some portmapping?
Make sure your incoming TCP port 6699 and incoming AND outgoing UDP port 6257 is opened and set to allow winmx to use for serving purposes.
Also be sure you haven't inadvertantly checked the "use proxy" option during setup. Petri? This is exactly how I set up my winnie through my firewall - should work for you too. Let us know if you still have a problem? gr :BP: |
Thanks goldie :) This has got me banjaxed! Users log into my site (artist, song title etc.) and the incoming line reads "awaiting incoming connection" - and after a while, times out. They don't seem ever to be able to start a download. I have my firewall set exactly as you describe, but I'm greatly puzzled by this phenomenon - shouldn't happen. But of course, winne hasn't got a help file, so that's no comfort!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm
Okies - you're using the p2p client not opennaps, right? You wouldn't being using windows XP by any chance would you ? Only other thing I could think of is try changing the default incoming/outgoing port #s for winmx..... Help someone??!!! |
does it always, always happen?? ... i have noticed this timing-out more frequently with those that want to download from me, but just lately ... it doesn't always happen, & it hadn't happened in the past (& i have xp home) ... so, i really don't know why it's happening more now, but maybe it's not you or your settings, maybe something going on with winmx?? ... i don't have an answer for you (what's new, right?? :shk: ) but just thought you'd like to know that you're not the only one it's happening to ... :hmm:

well......
XP can cause problems because of that built in firewall thingy. Winmx can also has timeout problems when both the ul'er and dl'er are both running walls. ........still hoping we get some more opinions up in here. |
My opinion is that marinated chicken is delicious. :tu:

You can increase the length of timeouts for uploads from the default of 45 seconds. Also, just turn off the firewall for a while, see if that's it.

:o There should be a smiley with egg all over its face! I'm sure that when I installed Sygate Pro firewall, I disabled the XP built-in jobbie. But when I looked a short while ago, there it was enabled again! (duh). Now it's disabled, I've increased the timeouts for uploads, and checked that the appropriate ports in Sygate are open. Now, MX is running, and we'll see if folks are able to access my files. Thanks a great big bunch for all your helpful advice thus far, folks, and I'll keep you all posted. (I'm not so concerned about my downloads taking forever - there's a few somewhat rare tracks a-waiting - but to get 8,031,480kb of a 8,263,091 file and then not be able to complete in three weeks is a bit much.)

Good Job Petri :D
Happy to see you've sort 'er out!!!!! :AP: :tu:  |
:) As promised, here's an update - she's a workin' - more uploads than I need! But that's good business, cos it shows that everything is now set up correctly. Thanks a bunch, GR, thanks, everybody:W:

The problem of uploads timing out in winmx is also seen by people who's computer is behind internet connection sharing or a NAT router.
The proper way to sort it out is to configure port forwarding in the device that is doing the connection sharing. This will also result in faster downloads on average. It may be easier to chance the winmx options to tell it that your computer cannot receive incoming TCP or UDP connection. You will only be able to upload to client that can receive incoming connections. Winmx does a reasonable job of deteting if it can receive connections when first installed but dosn't check every time it is run. |
