funny thing that. usually it connects perfectly, then another time nothing. some are having trouble connecting to the new network while others got on instantly.

try putting your friend's ip address in.

i noticed that some of you had trouble connecting ... did anyone get a message, when you couldn't connect, saying that it was possibly due to a firewall? just curious ... i don't know what happened, but a friend & i set ours up & we used it & it was working great. then the next time i tried to connect, i couldn't connect, & i got that error message. really frustrating, because it worked so great the 1st time & i didn't change anything (except entering the new ip address) ... i can't imagine what happened the 2nd time. i'm tempted to uninstall & install it again ... what do you think?? thanks for listening ... : )

For the network to work, there must be at least one user with a non-firewalled connection (or with a firewall that has the correct port opened for incoming connections). This unrestricted user can then act as a message broker for all the firewalled users so that anybody can chat with anybody else.

On small networks with only one non-firewalled user (or just a few of them) it can easily happen that no such 'free peer' happens to be online. In those situations the network is as good as dead. The network gets alive again when a non-firewalled user logs in and starts to run the messaging business.

when you go to start it the next time, go to preferences/private keys and make sure your key is active. i had this same problem yesterday and what happens when you shut the program off your private key becomes inactive so you have to activate it the next time.

JackSpratts 11-06-03 07:43 PM

Hi sith, welcome to the Napsterites Underground P2P-Zone!

We’re glad you’ve caught the Waste bug. Our first experimental open network, reported on in this thread, has been retired. It was a great success. Some people are now starting groups for close friends who’ve known each other for a while. That’s the way it seems to be going. These ad hoc associations have limited capacities and they fill up fast. The good news is setting up your own Trusted Network is simple. To start, you just need one other trusted person. Exchange IP’s and Public Keys with each other and you should connect. It’s automatic, or at least it’s supposed to be. After that invite more trusted friends and you’ve got yourself a group. For more privacy, you can give your network a name, but just make sure everyone has it or they won’t be able to see you.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Connecting is the #1 complication. We’ll try to help.

well thanks for the help, i got my network up and running, it currently is only me and one other user, but between the both of us we have about a 1tb of data, this program is exactly what i have been looking for in order for us to share our files without the hassel of having to bring our computers together and use the firewire, it has made transfering files over the internet easy and secure, does anyone know if there is going to be an update or any kind of upgrade in the near future??

Justin Frankel may not be in a position to upgrade it for a while unless he resigns from Nullsoft. But as the source code got widely distributed before AOL pulled the plug, there will almost surely be upgrades and further development done on it. I already heard rumors of a Linux port being available.
