Mindless greed is starting to wound P2P

Many ISPs are starting to impose caps on customers. Who can blame them when you look at the arrogance of some users. A 500MB movie is scoffed at; some now are over 2GB! People download stuff they don't even need just because they can. They remind me of looters who steal things they won't even use then throw them away just for the fun of it. These guys are ruining it for everyone.

Dawn 04-06-02 02:48 PM

I don't need the movies I download, but I want them. :o

Dawn 04-06-02 02:55 PM

Actually, I'd like to strangle the assholes who get some sort of sick joy out of creating fake files. Lots of bandwidth is wasted downloading fakes. :m:

twinspan 04-06-02 04:37 PM

re fakes
Dawnie, do you know about forums / link sites that can help you avoid fakes?

like sharereactor or filenexus for ed2k, or FastTrack's P2P Movies or FastTrack Central for Kazaa/Grokster/iMesh.

here's a small but growing FTC page of fakes to avoid:
Fake Movie List (some probs with damn bravenet host, so might not be visible in Opera)

Most times now, I don't d/l a movie until I'm sure it's verified on a site I know.

If the site doesn't have a verified file for the movie I'm interested in, then I search, d/l a small piece, stop, then play the piece in VirtualDub to check if it's for real.

Damn, I always learn so much when I visit this excellent forum.

Now all I need is a broadband connection. :D

Yes Twinspan, I do check those (when I remember). I'll make new shortcuts on my desktop tho, to be sure I don't forget.

Still, I think those putting fake files out there for the rest of us need to be castrated. :att:

greedy_lars 04-06-02 05:12 PM

i was reading the DIVX forum a while back, in regards to fakes someone recommended a program called virtualdub, to check out a file you alread have but wont play, open the file in virtualdub, then go file, and propertys, if it says its uncompressed rgb, its a fake. solved a few mysterys for me, so it wasent a codec prob after all:)

virtualdub is freeware and you can get it here

Oh...but I'm sure that a lot of people who downloaded American Pie 2, Harry Potter, Monster Inc from me (All before they were released anywhere) actually did enjoy the two episodes of Jeeves and Wooster they got...

:)

Mowzer 04-06-02 06:17 PM

I would like to file a motion for castration of Willow.

"Oh...but I'm sure that a lot of people who downloaded American Pie 2, Harry Potter, Monster Inc from me (All before they were released anywhere) actually did enjoy the two episodes of Jeeves and Wooster they got..."

Its clear by her statement she is trying to corrupt american youth, with campy british sitcoms.

a) I'm female...so castrating me might prove slighlty difficulty..

b) Jeeves And Wooster is fun. More people should see it.

c) I was making a point : Anyone who tries to download something such as "Spiderman, perfect copy" before it is released anywhere, really deserves what they get.

When I had stupid amounts of bandwidth available, I was happy to share whatever I downloaded....but I didn't provide anything new...

I always did want to give away copie's if Jeeves and Wooster though...as it'd be less frustrating than 500mb of nothing.

People who don't understand a joke, need to find someone who does and ask them to explain it first.

And anyhow, I'm more of a licker than a sucker.

Yeah, I was just making a point to willow. Kinda along the same line as your spiderman thing.

I see lesbians are able to read things at face value though.

If you want to know about female castration, you have to google the medical journals.

You can do that, but there's an even better way...

WKD has created side eDonkey sidepanels for the three main browsers (Opera, Nutscrape and Exploder) from which you can see latest releases and news from ed2k, sharereactor and filenexus, and search for stuff on those sites right from the side panel, with results coming up a in a new browser window.

(this has got me thinking: maybe I should check with JD of FastTrack Movies about a side panel for Opera , which is just a skinny web page. I think Nutscrape & Exploder use proprietary formats [surprise, surprise])

Here's a screen shot of it in action; a sidepanel search for 'Star Wars' on sharereactor

What you really need is a p2p client which can preview individual video frames or a short segment so you can be sure of what you're downloading. It's coming soon, I promise :o

as far as the topic of female castration:

cas·trate Pronunciation Key (kstrt)
tr.v. cas·trat·ed, cas·trat·ing, cas·trates
To remove the testicles of (a male); geld or emasculate.
To remove the ovaries of (a female); spay.
To deprive of virility or spirit; emasculate.

and what will it be called? "vapourster"? :POKE:

:CG:

seriously, please hurry. seems everyone's abandoning FastTrack for <hach-put!> trading (also known as 'WinMX') or fiefdoms (DC, FileTopia etc.) coz of all the leeches & spyware.

Even JohnDoe345's pulling the plug on FastTrack Movies

That't too bad. It was a great site but I've been amazed at how few sources there were from those quicklinks. FastTrack is still pretty good however and KaZaaLite seems faster than ever especially with the refined version of MorpheusX.

AYB 05-06-02 09:42 AM

lol aye i can understand it mite seem like vapourware atm so here's a bit of an AYB update...

The reason you havent heard anything more is because we're *still* in the final process of setting up the company which needs to be in place first to avoid all kind of legal issues.

I said I'd have a website up in the mean time but we're reconsidering whether its such a good idea to have one without a product to back it up. We don't want ppl to think we're all hype.

My partner in crime and I are just finishing up uni for the year so there's not much coding going on at the moment, but as soon as we're done for the summer we're going to get cracking. We're treating this project as our summer jobs so once we get started it shouldn't take too long. With that in mind I'd say a tenative release date is a month and a half away... but don't hold me to that :p

As soon as the company is finalised I'll be back here with the name and some hard info on exactly what features the client will have.
