Was anyone moved by Michael Green's speech?

I was moved by Michael Green's moving condemnation of the stealing and pirating of music through the internet--NOT! His shallow appeal rings so hollow in light of the industry's dubious business practices, which have proliferated since day one. Do they care about artists? As long as the bucks are rolling in. So Michael Green, F*ck you and the artists backs that you and your compatriots rode in on.

...the only thing that moved was my bowels. Then I had to run to the bathroom.

I lost respect for the Grammy's about 25 years ago and never got it back...it came about when I realized that none of the music that was getting awards bore any resemblance to anything me or my friends were listening to:hmm:

Jim Griffin is CEO of Cherry Lane Digital, the online arm of long-time music publishers Cherry Lane Music Group. In 1994, while serving as the technology chief for Geffen Records, Griffin made available the first "legitimate" commercial song for download on the Internet, a tune by Aerosmith. Speaking with Newsbytes this afternoon, Griffin described Greene's speech as "crazy."

"We have to start with the notion that the customer is always right," Griffin said. "If you start with the notion that the customer is always right, you have a better than even chance of getting their money. But if you start out with the notion that they're so wrong that you have to lecture them, then don't be surprised with what ensues."

Said Griffin, "That's exactly what is going on. We think to lecture them about how to use (digital music). It's just a terribly mistaken notion. It's crazy."
Amen Griffen, amen.

I missed that speech - anyone know where to get a transcript or even an article about it?

Haole 01-03-02 09:34 AM

The transcript is available at http://grammy.aol.com/features/speech.html
Have a barfbag handy?

Now that was some utter crap! :PUK: :PUK:

"This illegal file-sharing and ripping of music files is pervasive, out of control and oh so criminal." In reality those 'demo kids' just demonstrated how nicely and effectively the distribution of music can be arranged without any help from the record companies! :f: :afi:

A good quote Malk! :tu:

Please say hello to Numair, Stephanie and Ed. In just a couple of days they have downloaded nearly 6,000 songs. That's three kids, folks.
well, the inference is quite clear - he's implying that us forty-somethings can't download music as fast as those college kids:MAD:

we'll just see about that!:m:

damn straight knife! so michael green's thrown down the gauntlet eh? well i for one intend to prove just how wrong he is! c'mon people, who's with me? beat a thousand songs a day? try and stop me. just for starters a streamripper alone will do four hundred, and you can run as many as you want! then there's fasttrack, gnutella, blubster and the opennaps. let's do it! we'll show these young punks what it really means to download.:AM::cdr:

"Well, we asked three college-age students to spend two days with us and download as many music files as possible from easily accessible Web sites."

Did anyone notice they didn't use a p2p program? What does it matter, the important thing was the 6000. How many of those "nearly 6000 " songs will they be listening to later? In the end it's quantity over quality and that's what the industry likes best of all, isn't it? :ND:

Plus I found the speech to be too pseudo-factual rather than present a decent argument. It's stating 'this is what people do', 'this is the problem', with no why's or but's :BS:
Kind of emtpy, IMO. Maybe if you saw a guy at a podium (preferably on television, of course) saying it it would have been more persuasive. Gotta have a suit and tie, too. 'Educated' people don't BS, as everyone knows.

Read JS' post on the Peer to Peer thread "Downloading: What Really Happened..."
Hehehe. The real truth.
