An Alternative To Peer Guardian

You can still get busted with PG or any other blocklist. It is still a good idea to use them.
I use the PG block list with zonealarm and anonx proxy service. I have not been bothered by big brother or any other watchdog groups in months. |
MPAA seeks P2P Enforcer for antipiracy ops
MPAA seeks P2P Enforcer for antipiracy ops
By John Lettice Posted: 29/01/2004 at 12:52 GMT Enforcer wanted! The Motion Picture Association of America is seeking California-based Internet Enforcement Manager, a "mid to senior" level post at a salary of $60-75,000. The manager's responsibilities will include "overseeing all outside vendor development & usage... examining new piracy methods & protocols, overseeing Internet anti-piracy operations worldwide... [and] evidence-gathering efforts in support of litigation or criminal enforcement." So the successful candidate will be responsible for finding the people to bust, for the introduction of new methods to find the people to bust, and for keeping pace in the file-sharing arms race. The MPA says the job requires "advanced understanding of Internet protocols & networking systems," and rams this home by listing them: "including TCP/IP, DNS, WHOIS, IRC, FTP, HTTP, P2P & NNTP." More than is absolutely necessary for your average network admin, certainly. And in addition, a "working knowledge of DMCA and copyright law [is] preferred." from |
This looks like it's state of the art although I don't know how effective it can truly be.

Protowall
I just got back online after trying to install the driver into my network control panel. I'm afraid that I'm not an elite geek to give more details on what actually the problem was but luckily an uninstall of the driver and a reboot corrected the problem.
More than likely this was another PEBKAC (which I encounter too frequently) and obviously others have had success installing it. Just thought that I would post my experience with Protowall (especially since Dawn threatened me if I didn't). I have the peergaurdian IP database loaded into ZoneAlarm Pro so I'll just stick with that for now. Good luck to others and hope you avoid the pitfall I ran into. |

I feel a little guilty in that I haven't installed that yet. That screenshot came from their site. It was certainly worth a try trilo: you download alot. ps Dawn suckered you into posting...she gets a finder's fee for each new member she lures here and even more for each of their posts up to 100. ;) |

Download alot
I agree with the fact that I download alot but I like to think that I share alot too. 1.15 TB at present. That is what I'm more concerned with.
Bluetack's site is a site that I trust and use. I would have never figured out how to get the PGIP database into Zone Alarm without it. I appreciate you (napho) posting the link to it. Just because I had trouble doesn't mean that the proggie doesn't work. If I could just wean myself off of Torrents I probably could get by without any IP blockers. Maybe there is therapy for that like gambling or alchohol. Have to check into that......... Dawn, that smilie is exacty how I envision you. |

i installed this protowall and it looks very good..
so far uses nearly 8M of memory .. wich dont seem to too bad.. you need to add it as a service to your dialup/local connection properties |
After installing the protowall driver I couldn't connect to anything. With the Kerio firewall turned off I could connect again. After rebooting all is well. I guess the firewall can't work properly with the driver until you boot. At least with some firewalls anyway.

Install and Reboot
Thanks for the follow up in this thread. I was hosting a DC hub at the time and really wanted to get my internet back as fast as I could. I went with the uninstall and then reboot as opposed to leaving the driver in place and rebooting. (I guess I got into a panic when I lost the connection) I will give protowall another go today and if I run into the same problem, I will reboot and hopefully have the same outcome as you did. Thanks again.

PG's blocked is getting to big and is killing my processor power. Even running it on my Linux Shorewall box 3Ghz that I use as a gateway. When I pump 5Mb/s or more through the box my load average goes up to 1.2 or higher!!!!!
Is anyone else using a blocklist other than PG? How well does it work? Where do you Get? --Thanks |

well protowall for now beats any p2p protecting application-trust me i use and test a lot of such!
:PCA: why to use protowall http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/ind...?showtopic=761 as only it block about every internet protocol!(tcp/udp/icmp/igmp and abut 100 others!) blocks packets at drivers level and it has no known bugs it is final version now! plaese see our forum on p2p securities (anyone can be member of many foums ;)...) http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums link to current version of protowall http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/ind...?showtopic=722 http://bluetack.co.uk/pw/Protowall_installer.exe http://bluetack.co.uk/pwhelp moreover if you like other ways of blocking we got other application for you :SHO: The Blocklist Manager 2.41c http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/ind...wtopic=751&hl= it can convert out (frequently updated blacklists) to almost all used formats :) http://bluetack.co.uk/download/TheBl...nager2.41c.exe http://www.bluetack.co.uk/blmhelp/ http://bluetack.co.uk/download/blm.pdf Agent Jones |

i'd like to check it out, but i was wondering - i use Peer Guardian and occasionally have to switch it off to access certain sites (like Adobe or ABC News, for example). i notice Protowall is a bit more involved with the driver installation, so i'm wondering: how easy is it to turn it on and off, as needed? |
Note to Napho:
Ice has read this thread. :W: |
