RIAA Pursues Verizon Customer

RIAA Pursues Verizon Customer
Verizon has denied the RIAA's request to provide the name of an individual who's accused of trading hundreds of songs. Legal and privacy concerns have prevented Verizon from divulging the name.

"Verizon says it complies with requests regarding material that customers store on its servers. But because these allegedly illicit files reside on a peer- to-peer node, the company says, this is a novel situation, and a DMCA subpoena is not sufficient."

"Verizon looked carefully at the subpoena. This is different from anything they had sent us in the past," said Sarah Deutsch, a vice president at the telecommunications company.

This latest news reflects a growing trend from the RIAA to pursue individuals rather that corporations involved with file-sharing. In addition, it's not possible to know where this individual is located. All that's known is they've been trading hundreds of files, which describes virtually any Verizon broadband customer.
