Milestone At Morpheus
 

It's happening all over again, that wonderful confluence that was once generational but seems to happen yearly on the Internet. I'm talking about Morpheus of course and how it has laid claim to the mantle left by Napster. Those of you who've used it consistently since its' present P2P incarnation in April may know what I'm talking about: It's now picking up 10 to 20 thousand new regular users each week. Search returns have actually reflected those big user numbers for the first time, and a little hunting around now brings out fat pipes regularly. Although much different than Napster it does have that amazing thing in common with it: It's the Worlds File Sharing App of The Moment.

Recently, a Fasttrack programmer had this to say:

” In a way, we have reached the scalability limit of the network. However - at least for now - the only thing that's affected by this limit is the network stats.
Basically, the network stats are being distributed in a p2p manner, so once the network exceeds critical size, the real-time stats distribution cannot keep up with it (well, there's more to it actually, but that's not too far from truth).
We currently estimate the number of online users at peak hour to be close to a million, if not over it. This is a bit awkward situation we're in -- the only way to fix the stats system is to make some serious changes into the network architecture. Yet the incorrect stats are not enough to warrant such a rewrite." - jaan

Since jann contracts for FastTrack he's unaware that MusicCity is developing that very rewrite and has plans to release it this Fall.

For those with working versions of the present application it's a very cool time to be back in there and sharing.

Hitting the million user limit is a great achievement indeed and a good demonstration of the strength of social gravity in the filesharing world. Sure there is much to hope for in the client and in the node visibility but the message is clear: smash a network like Napster down and you'll soon have another one of the same caliber. People are today technically much smarter than they were during the early Napster days. They know how to look for new p2p software and how to organize themselves into new communities in new circumstances.

I agree TG. I've always felt that people will become smarter in looking for p2p software and organizing. With the current state of napster, it probably got those people who were resigned to paying for the napster subscription service looking for alternatives when they might not have had they settled into a pay program had napster rolled it out sooner. I think napster is way too late now.

I think if or when when napster launches their pay app, it is going to be a more difficult than ever sell to buy into the pay program.

Does anybody have any info on what the RIAA are doing about Morpheous?

They're stepping up the assault against ISPs. check out this:
