Police Raid College Dorm To Bust Up Another File-Sharing Network

Direct Connect Bust At Ohio State

A college residence hall was raided by police and computers were seized as another illegal file-sharing network came crumbling down.

The Ohio State University Police Department served search warrants at four campus dormitories Monday and seized five computers authorities believe were used to freely offer copyrighted works to nearly 3,000 users, according to a police spokesperson. The files were shared over the university's residence hall network ResNet using the file- sharing application Direct Connect.

No charges have been filed against any students so far, and an investigation is ongoing.

anyone think this is going to work to stop college kids from sharing?

i think it might. i'm just not sure how many arrests will be needed, and if the shitty press from the RIAA arresting college students will be worth it for them in the end.

I also think the scare tactics on end users can work - but only temporarily and only locally. The RIAA is no more in a position to stop the worldwide P2P movement.

If there is a tangible threat on some particular networks those in danger will switch to share more privately and cautiously but most of them don't stop sharing. And if the open war situation continues any longer, not only will the PR losses for the RIAA start to mount but the technology will also respond by providing more secure sharing environments.
