recordable 100gb dvd

thanks to Wired:
100 gig DVD: Matsushita Electric Industrial unveiled on Monday a recordable DVD that stores 50 gigabytes of data per side -- more than 10 times the storage capacity of current DVDs.

The company said the new technology, which uses blue-laser light and a semi-transparent material that permits recording of data on two separate layers, can hold more than four hours of digital high-definition motion pictures on one side of a disc.

Matsushita (MC), which already markets a DVD-RAM recorder using conventional red-laser technology, gave no target date for bringing its blue-laser, dual-layer DVD products to market.

"This is essentially a recording device for digital high-definition TV, so we'll consider what to do while watching the timing of terrestrial digital broadcasting," Shin-ichi Tanaka, director of Matsushita's optical disc systems development center, told a news conference.

my favorite part is the 1337 blue laser :eke:

Thanks for the info, Squid! :tu:

Wow... makes a perfect backup media for mp3-filled HDs too! :BL:
Just think about having the content of about 154 :cdr:s fitting into a single disk!

And at what point do you intend to listen to them all ?

I've got a cupboard full of CDs that I doubt I've listened to more than once....just because I can burn them all onto one CD or DVD doesn't mean I'm anymore likely to want to listen to them....

what, are you kidding? if you're playing background music all day - and you would if you had easy storage and retreival (no cueing, no commercials, no interuptions) - you can listen to 2000 songs a month.

that's about how many wav files each disc holds.

as mp3s@128 you'd have a years supply almost, or nearly "every" good rock, pop, country, classical, jazz, blues song per disc (or any genre). more than likely as people become acclimated to the concept, especially kids down the road, these discs would begin to hold exclusively the types of music that resonate deeply w/each listener, focusing our whole relationship with recorded music, making it much more intimate than it already is.

you'd love it, and still want more.

I was referring to actively listening to stuff...not background music.

If I want background music to match my mood, I'll turn on a radio.

(Classic FM is my current fave)

no reason you can't turn up a great one and really listen but there you go, the entire classic rock commercial free fm oeuvre would comfortably fit on one disc as the avg station rotates 1000 songs. a "deep" format goes maybe 3000.

take your fav fm anywhere. mail it to a friend. get something new in return. can't wait.
