What is the current state of encrypted P2P?

When WASTE hit the scene there was a lot of talk of programs like it being the new hot thing.

Well it's been quite some time since that happened, what is the current state of private P2P network software? There is still the original WASTE but there was some talk of the 1.5 version not being compatable with the older versions.

What other options are out there that people have heard of or tried?

multi 22-11-06 04:49 PM

have been using waste 1.5 beta3 with another mesh for quite sometime now without any noticeable ill effects :)

been pretty slack with tor ,ants ,mute ..etc
I did give ants a shot a little while ago but got nothing from it
it seemed to be tied into with some sort of IRC channel (bot?)

probably something toni66 could answer. we kicked it around last summer and he's plugged in. i know there is interest and some amount of developing in the community. in the meantime there's his client thread from july.

If there hasn't been a lot of talk about darknets, maybe that's by design. It means one of two things, a) there aren't any new private p2p apps being used, or b) they are being used and they're being kept secret. Either way we'll only hear about them from someone who knows someone who knows something about it.

Malk's question was about encrypted p2p which might be strictly interpreted to include only virtual private networks. Assuming there is also interest in open anonymous networks:

MUTE seems to enjoy fairly good popularity. According to project's Sourceforge homepage some 400 people download it daily, and it has been downloaded already 800,000 times over the past 3 years. (Despite of this the poor developer has managed to collect only $43.98 in donations to support his work. :RE: )

is hamachi opensource?

opensource is the best for crypted p2p.

you can not trust closed source clients , they can give your on other companies.
like then you use a client what can teh developers can look what you do.

Toni,

Can you tell me a bit about RShare? I downloaded it last week but have not installed it yet until I know more.

toni66 13-12-06 10:56 AM

hi

RShare uses strong cryption you can change your cryption method
for aes128/192/256.

RShare uses a routing method like when you download anything then you become not direct, it will be routed like minimum 2 - 3 hops.

only have few users...

but in future comes i think more users from ed2k network.

you can make a own darknet net with RShare too.
when will only use with friends.. wiht own webcache.

or make a own new anon net...
when disable the default webcaches and use new webcaches...

Hamachi is not open source. Not only that but it has two different levels, a free version and a premium version. Here's their comparison of free vs. premium:

http://premium.hamachi.cc/compare.php

Hamachi is a great idea and I have played around with it some; however, the free version lacks some basic functions which I have come to expect from small network file sharing programs. Example: The free version does not allow you to start or join a "group chat." The only way to communicate is through PM. Hamachi also limits speeds for free accounts and only allows a maximum of 16 people (17 including the "owner") per network. Up to 256 people can be in a premium network. There are many other limitations but I will let you read them for yourselves.

The thing that tops it off for me. Premium accounts are a subscription, it is not a 1-time payment deal. Premium accounts run at ~$40 a year. I'm not willing to pay that when I can use other programs that are open source and only require a little bit more effort to set up.

My overall rating of the program would have to be a 4/10. It's a good idea, but the free/premium limitations and the cost make it almost useless in my eyes.
