Salvo Fired Against RIAA
 

Information Wave Technologies has announced it will actively deny the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) from accessing the contents of its network. Earlier this year, the RIAA announced its new plan to access computers without owner's consent for the sake of protecting its assets. Information Wave believes this policy puts its customers at risk of unintentional damage, corporate espionage, and invasion of privacy to say the least.

Due to the nature of this matter and RIAA's previous history, we feel the RIAA will abuse software vulerabilities in a client's browser after the browser accesses its site, potentially allowing the RIAA to access and/or tamper with your data. Starting at midnight on August 19, 2002, Information Wave customers will no longer be able to reach the RIAA's web site. Information Wave will also actively seek out attempts by the RIAA to thwart this policy and apply additional filters to protect our customers' data.

Well, the first half of the announcement sounds really good, Kinda payback for suing the ISP's. But then they say they'll frag any subscriber who try's to use Gnutella: "Clients which connect to our peer-to-peer clients, and then afterwards attempt to illegally access the network will be immediately blacklisted from Information Wave's network." Who ever said that Gnutella was an illegal network? And since when is entrapment part of any ISP's service plan? Overall it sound's like a pretty bad announcement.

Still, I doubt there's a mad rush by IWT users to the RIAA's site while it's still accessible.:cool:

that's the cryptic part mazer and it’s something that could use a fuller explanation: “ and then afterwards attempt to illegally access the network”. i read it to mean iwt's using dummy uploads to bait and then expose and block record company spies, using the riaas' own questionable actions against them, but it may mean something else, although from the tone of the press release that doesn't seem too likely. still it is the first i’ve heard any isp taking an active role technically against the riaa.

No, what that means is that they will run their own Gnutella clients. When other people connect to the Gnutella network through IWT's clients, and use that connection to IWT to access IWT's network, then they will be terminated and/or recorded.

It is not suggesting that the Gnutella network will be blocked to its users.
