Here's one for you old hippies ;)
One of my favs done by Arlo Guthrie The City of New Orleans Riding on the City of New Orleans, Illinois Central Monday morning rail Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders, Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail. All along the southbound odyssey The train pulls out at Kankakee Rolls along past houses, farms and fields. Passin' trains that have no names, Freight yards full of old black men And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles. CHORUS: Good morning America how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car. Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score. Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor. And the sons of pullman porters And the sons of engineers Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel. Mothers with their babes asleep, Are rockin' to the gentle beat And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel. CHORUS Nighttime on The City of New Orleans, Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee. Half way home, we'll be there by morning Through the Mississippi darkness Rolling down to the sea. And all the towns and people seem To fade into a bad dream And the steel rails still ain't heard the news. The conductor sings his song again, The passengers will please refrain This train's got the disappearing railroad blues. Good night, America, how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. |

Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat Summer's here and the time is right For dancing in the streets They're dancing in Chicago Down in New Orleans In New York City Martha And The Vandells - Dancing In the Street. |
Of course, I just had to bring up this Red Hot Chili Peppers song, Apache Rose Peacock. from Blood Sugar Sex Majik
Sittin'on a sack of beans, sittin'down in a New Orleans, You won't belive what I've seen, sittin'on that sack of beans. Lunatics on pogo sticks, another soutern fried freak on a crucifix. Hicks don't miss with politics, peolple on the street just kickin' to the licks. Yes my favorite place to be is not a land called Honah Lee. Mentally or physic'lly, I wanna be in New Orleans. Oh good brother, just when I throught that I had seen it all, My eyes popped out, my dick got hard and I dropper my jaw. I saw a bird walkin' down the block, name Apache Rose Peacock, I could not speak i was in shock, I told my knees to please not knock Yes, my favorite place to be. It's not a land called Honah Lee. Mentally or physic'lly, I wanna be in New Orleans. A little boy came along, name of Louis Armstrong. Said that who left me silly, she liked the looks of me and my willy. So I found her in the quarter, good God how I adored her. Oh she made me feel so cozy, when she told me I could call her Rosey. I kiss you hair, your skin so bare. I'll take you with me girl, anywhere. You fare well in stormy weather. I never met a girl that I liked better. Twinkle twinkle little star, shining down on my blue car. Drivin'down the boulevard, she was soft and I was hard. Apache Rose gotta rockin' peacock, hottest ass on the goddamn block. Rockin' to the beat of the funky-ass Meters, she has on of those built-in heaters. |

Well, it's a reach, but I finally figured out why the Grateful Dead's "Truckin'" popped into my head when you asked.

Thats fine CQ because right befor the lyrics you posted they say - "Houston to close to New Orleans."
Malk - I would like to hear that AC/DC and Motor City Madmans version. Oscars song has also been covered many times. Van Halen and David Bowie/Mick Jagger. I do wish summer were here. Apache Rose - Great tune, I forgot about that one. Me and 4 friends spent a weekend in Nawlins in 92 and slept in my Blue Car, we sang that song alot. Wish I was back on the Bayou, rollin' with some Cajun Queen. Wishin' I where a fast freight train, just a chooglin' on down to New Orleans. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Born on the Bayou |
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele - Blood Roses
Blood roses blood roses
Back on the street now Can't forget the things you never said On days like these starts me thinking Chickens get a taste of your meat, girl Chickens get a taste of your meat, yes You gave him your blood and your warm little diamond He likes killing you after you're dead You think I'm a queer I think you're a queer I think you're a queer Said I think you're a queer I've shaved every place where you've been boy Shaved every place where you been, yes God knows I know I've thrown away those graces The Belle of New Orleans Tried to show me once how to tango Wrapped around your feet Wrapped around like good little roses Blood roses blood roses back on the street now You've cut out the flute from the throat of the loon At least when you cry now he can't even hear you Chickens get a taste of your meat When he sucks you deep Sometimes you're nothing but meat |

Malk - thanks for mentioning Dire Straits' track. They really don't get enough credit IMO. It's a great one, off the 1991 On Every Street (which is a great album, as was all of DS's material) for those that don't know.
Another with New Orleans...of course... Led Zeppelin - Royal Orleans One time love, take care how you use it Try to make it last all night And if you take your pick, be careful how you choose it Sometimes it's hard to feel it bite Feel it bite A man I know, went down to Louisiana Had himself a bad, bad fight And when the sun peeked through John Cameron with Suzanna He kissed the whiskers left and right Whiskerrrrs Now now now, fright subsides Out at a hotel in The Quarter, our friends checked in to pass the night Now love gets hot, but fire preceded water Poor whiskers set that room alight Whiskerrrrs Down on Bourbon Street, you know it's right You can see my friend and they run around all through the night Most everywhere, 'til the closet's bare Run for the razor, bud, doin' up my hair New Orleans queens, sure know how to schmooze it Maybe for some that seems alright When I step out, strut down with my sugar She best not talk like Barry White Now one time love, take care how you use it Try to make it last all night And if you take your pick, be careful how you choose it Sometimes it's hard to feeeeel it bite |

...I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell. So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix... |
