search times on various p2p networks

Hi:

I am wondering if certain search queries take longer than others. I was told that with modern database searches, queries with more words took longer (regardless of how long each word is). Does anyone know if this is true on various p2p networks? In general, is there a way in which searches are more "complex" and may take longer to find?

I am particularly interested in these communities:
- FastTrack/Kazaa
- WPN/WinMX
- OpenNap

Sorry for such a technical question! thanks in advance for any assistance.

Welcome to NU's p2p.

Why not test the theory for yourself? If you routinely use any of these programs, it should be fairly easy to catch any trends. If you're not already a user, than perhaps it's time you did, dl any of the programs you mention and see for yourself, eh? <sorry if i seem disrespectful>

But it's such an odd question.............

I would say no, just because the network propagation delays will account for a much more significant time slice than a search on a CPU. But I guess if everyone started to send 20 word searches we'd notice a difference. OTOH, a single word search could bring up thousands of search results, and would take longer to return, than a long search with maybe a couple hits.

Thanks for the quick replies! I tried this myself on opennap via audiognome and there seemed to be slightly more delay when I searched for more words. But I guess this network propagation issue is probably less relavant there than on Kazaa...

Does anyone have a link which might describe a bit more of the details on how search queries work on the different networks?

I've noticed a slight lag in the results showing up when I have a more complex search involving Artist, Size, Type etc instead of just 1 category. But the other factors like how many results are returned are more significant. And on Kazaa++ you can keep the search going indefinitely so it's hard to even say how long a search takes.
TankGirl is good at this kind of thing...as well as driving men wild so she should have an answer for you later. :eke:

There is a huge amount of noise to search through to find good information.

You could start here.
