daddydirt 14-07-08 01:17 PM

who's your Usenet provider?

napho 14-07-08 01:24 PM

Like DD implied, it's probably your server.

theknife 14-07-08 02:48 PM

ah, i think this is the issue:

Notice

AT&T takes its obligation to protect its customers from child pornography very seriously. We're working with public officials and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the effort to help prevent the distribution of this harmful and illegal content.

We'll continue to provide access to newsgroups as part of our broadband offering, but we'll no longer include alt.bin* nor alt.bain* hierarchies because of the possibility of child pornography in those particular groups and the difficulty in ensuring that no child porn reappears in them.

Our customers will continue to have full access to all lawful content on the Internet. That includes newsgroups, which are available from multiple sources, not just ISPs.

Customers may still access lawful content of their choosing from unaffiliated newsgroup providers.

Currently there are no reported issues. However, if you are experiencing a problem with the News Service or if you have any other concerns please email us at newshelp@bellsouth.com

oh well...looks like i'll need to start paying for usenet. anybody recommend a good service?

edit: also, anybody think encrypted usenet service is worth the extra $'s?

malvachat 15-07-08 03:17 AM

I'm on astraweb.(my thanks to napho)
110gb for $25 138 days retention
Works for me.
Using SSL encryption on their Secure Server.

napho 15-07-08 05:00 AM

malvachat wanted a block account. If you want an unlimited monthly one, this server is inexpensive, even with the very weak American $

http://www.xlned.com/bestellen/

$4.79/month for 2.5MB speed/ $42.50 for the year

$7.98/month for 5MB speed/ $71 for the year

theknife 15-07-08 05:02 AM

are the speeds per second? 5mb seems pretty slow...

i don't mind paying a few bucks for the service - do you think SSL encryption is worth paying for?

hey mal, where do you get your nzb's?

edit: Bellsouth/ATT always made me uncomfortable since they apparently spy on everything that passes thru their servers...

The 10MB account is $9.60/ month or $85 a year. And it includes SSL. They even have an upload server with SSL. I didn't know how much you were willing to pay, Mr Oil Tycoon. Some people get pissed that it's not free anymore.

Dawn 15-07-08 06:07 AM

I use Xlned Lite, its 312KB. I was torn between that and the next one up, but I figured I'd try the Lite at first. I went with the 6 months rate. They let you easily upgrade if you decide you want a faster one.

This is my favorite site for nzb's http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php

napho 15-07-08 06:27 AM

Also http://www.merlins-portal.net/Vbulletin/nzblist.php and http://www.nzbsrus.com/

theknife 15-07-08 02:46 PM

yup, i like nzbsrus but i'm confused about something: the retention rate for nzbsrus is 20 days, if you don't give them money...so if you sign up for a paid usenet service, are you also getting nzb's from them, therefore taking advantage of their longer retention rate?

Only the servers that use an interface allow you to get nzb's from them, or even download directly without an nzb. But they cost more because they cater to new users (take advantage of).
This place has a longer retention for free. http://findnzb.com/

Here's a deal for AT&T people if you want longer retention. http://ngroups.net/index1.php?p=3isp

yer a compendium of useful info, nap:W:

i'll have to ponder my next move...can't complain about paying a few bucks per month for unlimited content, just a question of where to put the $$'s...

hey one more dumb question: i'm not quite clear on how you establish multiple simultaneous connections on say, Newsleecher, for example...are you opening separate instances of the same program?

and btw, thanks to all for the info

Just put in the # of connections the server allows. And also, you can have more than 1 server running if that's applicable. I've had as many as 20 free servers with a total of 60 connections going at once.

malvachat 16-07-08 03:08 AM

Get my NZB's from any of the top sites United forums, matrix and merlin.
I've only been on the groups for three months and grabbed about 20gb of music.A couple of films a week and the odd thing.I've even uploaded stuff, but let takes a while coz my connection is slow.

hey mal, which news reader are you using with your astraweb ssl? i'm finding i can't get Newsleecher to work with their SSL and their tech support is tellilng me to switch news readers (which i'd really rather not do...)

malvachat 24-07-08 03:18 AM

Sure I'm using altbinz(free of course)

http://www.altbinz.net/

It works great for me.

secure.news.astraweb.com is what I connect to.
I get 50 connections.
When I put this into altbinz it automatically ticks the ssl box to port 563 or 443
Plus I get three other servers as back up.
I find altbinz perfect for me not being very tech minded.
It unrars the files and everything.
I set up using this quick start guide.

yup, just set that up last night - seems to work like a champ. SSL and all:W:

malvachat 24-07-08 07:43 AM

Good for you.
Yeah these newsgroup things are the way to go.
I've come across some real gems the last couple of months.
Naps deserves a lot of credit he pointed me in the right direction at first.
Of course once you get involved with a site, there's always somebody willing to pass on information.
That's the joy of the net,it out ways some the pratts you have to deal with sometimes.
(Nudge,nudge,wink,wink,know what I mean?)
