This year so far ...
What do you like in 2002, what do you hate?
|
hmm nothing good really stands out ... only dance music :o
|
Sonic Youth--Murray Street
DJ Shadow The Eminem Show Wilco--Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Chelsea Walls DJ Spooky--Optometry Beth Orton--Daybreaker That's all I can think of for now. |
Underworld - A hundred days off is cool
Soulwax 2 many djs should be owned by everyone Sugababes - Freak Like me was the only number one i had any respect for this year To be honest, thats all thats jumped out at me so far |
best albums so far:
Sonic Youth-"Murray Street" The Streets-"Original Pirate Material" Best Tunes: Sugababes-"Freak like me" Shakedown-"At night" LCD Soundsystem-"Losing my edge" The Rapture-"House of jealous lovers" |
I rediscovered The Blue Nile this year if that counts, I reccomend "Tinseltown in the rain" to anybody here, it's one of those songs that's hard to stick a label on.
Also the new Coldplay album sounds ok. |
Soulwax - 2 Many DJs
nothing else this year stands a chance of even coming close... shout outs for new underworld album cooper temple clause the hives the white stripes freelance hellraiser |
beck - sea change is kinda boring :hmm:
the moldy peaches album is great :BL: |
Theres this great new yoik band called Interpol with a deadly rock album called turn on the bright lights
Album of the year for me so far maybe, i was supposed to see them live in the local dingy rawk cavern this week but they CANCELLED  |

The latest Low "Trust" is decent. Amon Tobin "Out From Out Where" is good. Elvis Costello "When I Was Cruel" is great. |
Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon
I think ramona might like the second track, Facing East.. reminds me of dead can dance. |
Quote:
props to the new jurassic 5 album though |
LIke: (2002 releases)
Peter Murphy - Dust Peter Gabriel - Up David Sylvian - Camphor David Bowie - Heathen Bryan Ferry - Frantic The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Frou Frou - Details The Residents - Demons Dance Alone (nearly all really old guys) Hate: Not enough room here... |
i'm with ramona on frou frous’ details especially tracks hear me out, dumbing down of love and flicks (burned the whole thing plus extra stuff). 23 yo lead singer imogen heap (related to uriah?) is a bit of a cross between dolores o'riordan and björk but isn't a pain the ass yet so that's a plus. i'm getting into jai uttals' middle eastern blends and i'm always combing the trance-ambient bins for gems like the ibiza comps, dzihan kamien, funki porcini, a man called adam etc. thanks remy shand for nailing that spacey brand of smooth funk that seemed to exist only in a february 1973 parallel universe. for the night sweat sounds of ahbahnah koobah it’s gotta be beny more - try his Las Mulatas del Cha Cha Cha (Ole!) note: dance partner's a must + drink prodigious amounts of cap'n morgan/equivlent. wow, tinsletown in the rain – there’s a very cool flashback. got it on vinyl. so i've got 10s of thousands of files but only two ears. how do i fit them all in? :p

While it may stand out in a lackluster year, it is, imho, good but not that good. Many of the songs just seems to meander aimlessly for 6 or 7 minutes when they would have done well to end at 4. I have several friends who are also diehard Gabriel fans and they agree....one of them commented that it was almost as if Up was a soundtrack to some imaginary film.:uu: |

Attempted to d/l some of the Bryan Ferry stuff that Ramona mentioned....I found the what appeared to be all of the cd from the same user. The d/l was extraordinarily fast, but none of the songs play at all. Looks like a variation on the spoof. Dunno why these guys think this is effective against filesharing - it just makes me determined to find the songs:f: |
The Notwist - Neon Golden :tu: |
Stuff that rocks:
Bad Religion - Process of Belief Angry with a great sense of fun, and Graffin's voice gets better as it gets older. Musically their tightest album. Was leaked a few months early by #ego, but not officially released until Feb 2002 ;) Goldfinger - Open Your Eyes Wicked melodies. Fast, punk pop music. Weezer - Maladroit As good as all their other albums, and better than Pinkerton :tu: No Use for a Name - Hard Rock Bottom More fun than a bag of monkeys :p Stuff that sucks: Just about everything played on the radio here. |

Good singer/songwriter-type stuff:
Joseph Arthur--Redemption's Son Jeff Tweedy and Jim O'Rourke--Loose Fur Richard Buckner--Impasse |
Can´t believe nobody mentioned THIS!

...all kinds of good stuff here. I'm into New Order's Crystal at the moment. Can't believe it's been like 20 years since Blue Monday for these guys and they still rock.:W: |

my allllllllll time fav will always be "Enjoy The Silence", by Mike Koglin....so haunting....mesmerizing....lots of different sounds in there....i like that.....and that it has few words. i like to feel the music sometimes without lyrics, and they mos def did it with this song. i think this is why i like this genre of music. i like these lists as well.......still working on LV's. :tu: |
I like Enjoy The Silence also. I really like techno/trance that uses traditional instruments in the mix. Robert Miles is a big fave of mine also. :AP:

Didn't like Sonic Youth + I.C.P. (no, not Insane Clown Posse)--Into the Fishtank |
I thought you liked "Murray Street"....Why the change of heart?
|
No, I liked Murray Street very much. In the Fishtank is a different project with a trio called I.C.P. (with Hans Bennik) and The Ex, and it's an uninspiring, abstract noisefest, along the lines of the SYR stuff. It's not that i'm not fond of noise, but I don't love this.
EDIT: Wanted to add that I like the Tin Hat Trio's "The Rodeo Eroded" CD alot. It's almost carnivalesque in its feel with odd instrumentation (dobro, accordian, violin) and a vocal cameo by Willie Nelson. It's not for everyone, but if you like Tom Waits' musical style, you might like this. |
I agree w/ Ramona and assorted on the Flaming Lips - yoshimi battles the pink robot
Beck - Sea Change Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot My friend is the girlfriend of the sound guy for Wilco, which makes me almost famous hehe |
