Here's one for you old hippies ;)
One of my favs done by Arlo Guthrie The City of New Orleans Riding on the City of New Orleans, Illinois Central Monday morning rail Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders, Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail. All along the southbound odyssey The train pulls out at Kankakee Rolls along past houses, farms and fields. Passin' trains that have no names, Freight yards full of old black men And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles. CHORUS: Good morning America how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car. Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score. Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor. And the sons of pullman porters And the sons of engineers Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel. Mothers with their babes asleep, Are rockin' to the gentle beat And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel. CHORUS Nighttime on The City of New Orleans, Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee. Half way home, we'll be there by morning Through the Mississippi darkness Rolling down to the sea. And all the towns and people seem To fade into a bad dream And the steel rails still ain't heard the news. The conductor sings his song again, The passengers will please refrain This train's got the disappearing railroad blues. Good night, America, how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. |

Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat Summer's here and the time is right For dancing in the streets They're dancing in Chicago Down in New Orleans In New York City Martha And The Vandells - Dancing In the Street. |
Of course, I just had to bring up this Red Hot Chili Peppers song, Apache Rose Peacock. from Blood Sugar Sex Majik
Sittin'on a sack of beans, sittin'down in a New Orleans, You won't belive what I've seen, sittin'on that sack of beans. Lunatics on pogo sticks, another soutern fried freak on a crucifix. Hicks don't miss with politics, peolple on the street just kickin' to the licks. Yes my favorite place to be is not a land called Honah Lee. Mentally or physic'lly, I wanna be in New Orleans. Oh good brother, just when I throught that I had seen it all, My eyes popped out, my dick got hard and I dropper my jaw. I saw a bird walkin' down the block, name Apache Rose Peacock, I could not speak i was in shock, I told my knees to please not knock Yes, my favorite place to be. It's not a land called Honah Lee. Mentally or physic'lly, I wanna be in New Orleans. A little boy came along, name of Louis Armstrong. Said that who left me silly, she liked the looks of me and my willy. So I found her in the quarter, good God how I adored her. Oh she made me feel so cozy, when she told me I could call her Rosey. I kiss you hair, your skin so bare. I'll take you with me girl, anywhere. You fare well in stormy weather. I never met a girl that I liked better. Twinkle twinkle little star, shining down on my blue car. Drivin'down the boulevard, she was soft and I was hard. Apache Rose gotta rockin' peacock, hottest ass on the goddamn block. Rockin' to the beat of the funky-ass Meters, she has on of those built-in heaters. |

Well, it's a reach, but I finally figured out why the Grateful Dead's "Truckin'" popped into my head when you asked.

Thats fine CQ because right befor the lyrics you posted they say - "Houston to close to New Orleans."
Malk - I would like to hear that AC/DC and Motor City Madmans version. Oscars song has also been covered many times. Van Halen and David Bowie/Mick Jagger. I do wish summer were here. Apache Rose - Great tune, I forgot about that one. Me and 4 friends spent a weekend in Nawlins in 92 and slept in my Blue Car, we sang that song alot. Wish I was back on the Bayou, rollin' with some Cajun Queen. Wishin' I where a fast freight train, just a chooglin' on down to New Orleans. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Born on the Bayou |
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele - Blood Roses
Blood roses blood roses
Back on the street now Can't forget the things you never said On days like these starts me thinking Chickens get a taste of your meat, girl Chickens get a taste of your meat, yes You gave him your blood and your warm little diamond He likes killing you after you're dead You think I'm a queer I think you're a queer I think you're a queer Said I think you're a queer I've shaved every place where you've been boy Shaved every place where you been, yes God knows I know I've thrown away those graces The Belle of New Orleans Tried to show me once how to tango Wrapped around your feet Wrapped around like good little roses Blood roses blood roses back on the street now You've cut out the flute from the throat of the loon At least when you cry now he can't even hear you Chickens get a taste of your meat When he sucks you deep Sometimes you're nothing but meat |

Malk - thanks for mentioning Dire Straits' track. They really don't get enough credit IMO. It's a great one, off the 1991 On Every Street (which is a great album, as was all of DS's material) for those that don't know.
Another with New Orleans...of course... Led Zeppelin - Royal Orleans One time love, take care how you use it Try to make it last all night And if you take your pick, be careful how you choose it Sometimes it's hard to feel it bite Feel it bite A man I know, went down to Louisiana Had himself a bad, bad fight And when the sun peeked through John Cameron with Suzanna He kissed the whiskers left and right Whiskerrrrs Now now now, fright subsides Out at a hotel in The Quarter, our friends checked in to pass the night Now love gets hot, but fire preceded water Poor whiskers set that room alight Whiskerrrrs Down on Bourbon Street, you know it's right You can see my friend and they run around all through the night Most everywhere, 'til the closet's bare Run for the razor, bud, doin' up my hair New Orleans queens, sure know how to schmooze it Maybe for some that seems alright When I step out, strut down with my sugar She best not talk like Barry White Now one time love, take care how you use it Try to make it last all night And if you take your pick, be careful how you choose it Sometimes it's hard to feeeeel it bite |

...I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell. So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix... |
Big River - Grateful Dead
Well I taught that weeping willow how to cry cry cry, Taught the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky. Tears I cried for that woman are gonna flood you big river, And I'm a gonna sit right here until I die. I met her accidentally in St. Paul, Minnesota, She tore me up everything I heard her drawl, that southern drawl. Well I heard my dream went back downstream, cavortin' in Davenport, And I follow you big river when you called. Well I followed her down to St. Louie, later on down the river, Trader said she's been here, but she's gone, boy, she's gone. Well I followed her down to Memphis, but she just walked off the bus, She raised a few eyebrows and she went on down alone. Well I've gotten on down to Baton Rouge, River Queen roll on, Take that woman down to New Orleans, New Orleans. I give up, I've had enough, followed my blues on down to the gulf, She loves you big river more than me. ps Its got a Memphis in there too. :) |

"New orleans"-Silver Jews
"There is a house in New Orleans, not the one you've heard about , I'm talking bout another house. They spoke of gold in the cellar that a Spanish gentleman had left. I crept in a hundred years ago with a dagger tucked in my vest. Legends of gold I've tried to hold in the grey half-light of the hallway at night...1-2-3-4-5 we're trapped inside this song where the nights are so long. Theres traps inside us all and the nights are so tall. And the night is so tall. And the knife is so tall" |

Alright! Bourbon blues on the street, loose and complete Under skies all smoky blue green I can't forsake a dixie dead shake So we danced the sidewalk clean My memory is muddy What's this river that I'm in? New Orleans is sinking man And I don't wanna swim Colonel Tom, what's wrong? what's going on? You can't tie yourself up for a deal He said, Hey north you're south shut your big mouth, You gotta do what you feel is real Ain't got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire Picking out the highlights of the scenery Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me I had my hands in the river My feet back up on the banks Looked up to the lord above And said, hey man thanks Sometimes I fell so good, I gotta scream She said Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean She said, she said, I swear to god she said My memory is muddy What's this river that I'm in? New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim Swim! wow old bump !! clued in as soon as i seen PB post (rip) :ghug: |

Louisiana 1927 by Randy Newman
What has happened down here is the wind have changed Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain Rained real hard and rained for a real long time Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline The river rose all day The river rose all night Some people got lost in the flood Some people got away alright The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines Six feet of water in the streets of Evangelne CHORUS Louisiana, Louisiana They're tyrin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away Louisiana, Louisiana They're tryin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away President Coolidge came down in a railroad train With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has done To this poor crackers land." CHORUS |
Have you ever been down to New Orleans
Lord, lord, them crazy queens Crying the blues is what they do down there Fortune teller, he knows your name Fortune teller, he'll tell you your game Crying the blues, that's what they do down there Money dripping from a willow tree He never want me Lazy bones, I ain't got a dime Just biding my time If I find a way to choose New Orleans, where they're crying the blues Drinking bourbon from a dixie cup Hanging out till the sun comes up Crying the blues is what they do down there French women, all I need Up and down old Bourbon Street Crying the blues is what they do down there If I find a way to choose New Orleans, where they're singing the blues J. Cindy of New Orleans - Waylon Jennings
Down by the river where the big boats go by Each day you could see them as evening was nigh They planned to be married at the first sign of spring And Jim would take Cindy to see New Orleans. The town folks would smile as they sat there alone Jim talked of the day he'd make Cindy his own He saved his money to buy her a ring And take his sweet Cindy to see New Orleans. --- Instrumental --- One day a riverboat gambler chanced by And captured her heart with his sweet words and lies He told her come with me and you'll be a queen So they left together to see New Orleans. Each day you can see Jim though years have gone by Down by the river where the big boats go by She wrote she'd return at the first sign of spring He's waiting for Cindy to see New Orleans... |
Ramblin Man - Waylon Jennings
I've been down the Mississippi, down through New Orleans I've played in California there ain't too much I haven't seen I'm a Ramblin' Man Don't fool around with a Ramblin' Man Left a girl in West Virginia Up there where the green grass grows Got a girl in Cincinnati, waitin' where the Ohio River flows I'm a Ramblin' Man Don't give your heart to a Ramblin' Man You better move away You're standing too close to the flame Once I mess with your mind Your little heart won't be the same I'm a Ramblin' Man Don't mess around with a Ramblin' Man Well, up in Chicago I was known as quite a boy Down in Alabama they call me the man of joy I'm a Ramblin' Man Don't fall in love with a Ramblin' Man You better move away You're standing too close to the flame Once I mess with your mind Your little heart won't be the same I'm a Ramblin' Man Don't mess around with a Ramblin' Man |
Toby Keith - New Orleans
He was twenty-five, she was twenty-eight He was home grown country, she'd just pulled off the interstate She bought a Dr. Pepper, ten dollars worth of gas She was ovbiously lost but too afraid to ask directions So he offered her a smile and a stick of Beech Nut gum He said where you headed to girl, where are you coming from She said New Orleans but that's another story New Orleans that's another time That's another town, that's another life First she stayed a day then she stayed a week Couple of months later they were living on his parent's street He worked the station and she worked the store And then they had a baby and Then they had one more little Jesse When she dropped the kids off at the mother's day out All the ladies had their questions But they knew not to ask about New Orleans but that's another story New Orleans that's another time That's another town, that's another life Wednesday night supper at the First Baptist Church Stranger standin' in the doorway As they're passin' out the dessert He said go on and pack your bags Cause I'm here to take you home I'm goin' back to Louisiana And woman I ain't gonna go with out you There's a few defining moments in every person's life When you know what you've done wrong And you know what you've done right And before the congregation and her husband and her kids She says, "How dare you even speak to me After everything you did"...in New Orleans but that's another story New Orleans that's another time That's another town, that's another life That's another town, that's another life |
Elvis Presley - New Orleans
You'll never know What heaven means Until you've been down to New Orleans You ain't been livin' till you cuddle and coo With some black-eyed baby by de old bayou You've never seen You've never seen those Cupid doll queens Like they got 'em in New Orleans And, ooh, they love you like no-one can It makes you awful glad that you were born a man. If-if-if you ain't been there Then you ain't been nowhere The livin's lazy and the lovin's fine If you feel low down So help me Hannah You should lose the blues in Loui-si-i-si-ana. Get the lead Get the lead out of your jeans And hot foot it down, hot foot down to where? New Orleans Louisiana baby tells you stay awhile Live it up, love it up, southern style Way down in New New Orleans. |
Down In New Orleans - John Kay
Down in New Orleans The nights are hot and long Ev'ry day's Saturday night Down in the quarter The music's loud and strong Wish I'd be there tonight Down in New Orleans The nights are free and wild Women will treat you all right Down from the quarter they're calling me And I wish I could go tonight Every time I walk on by The joints on Bourbon Street I feel a glow from my head Right down to my feet They're places of ev'ry description Where no one cares who you are There are people of all persuasions Carousing in the crowded bars Down in New Orleans The nights are free and wild Women will treat you all right Down from the quarter they're calling me And I wish I could go tonight Walk right on in, sit right down Drink a hurricane While everybody gathers 'round To watch the dancers undulate The workin' girl in the corner Is hitting the local bar And everyone in the quarter Brace themselves for Mardi Gras Down in New Orleans… |
