yes sith it's very stable, i know of groups on that long or longer too. i've been on a small one (7-14 users) that's been running continuosly since the evening of june 8th. i'm in and out, on sometimes for a few hours, sometimes for a few days, but the group maintains cohesion and accessibility. sharing is minimal and so is open chat but it seems to go and go. maintenence isn't an issue. what is tho is initial connectivity. we're finding more and more users who have not been able to make that first connection, and we don't know why.

It's weird, the way some people can connect and others can't. I noticed the first time I logged on I couldn't connect to pod even though I had his key and IP address. I had to connect to Jack's IP because I knew that he had my key. But now every time I log in I connect to pod's computer first, within a second or two of starting the program.

It must be in the way keys are propagated throught the network. A person on the net could import an other person's key, but that key will not be propagated until that person logs in. If you give your key to one person but try to connect to an other person you won't be able to. In our case, even though Jack is acting spokesman of the network, you'd have to give your key to pod before you try to connect to him. Or else Jack would have to publish his IP number and stay connected all the time.

What this program needs is the ability to assign one computer to act as a keyserver, and any time someone imports a new key then that key would be sent directly to the keyserver so it could accept incomming connections from the new user. Though I imagine this would make the network more vulnurable to intrusion: there would be a publicly known, non-firewalled portal that could be hacked, DoSed, or otherwise shut down. The network would still remain if that node was disconnected, but it would not grow very quickly unless a new keyserver was assigned.

Yup, that's how it appears to work. I go through this thread every so often and add keys of people I recognize, so you'll eventually connect to me.

I can't download either.

Does the same thing it did when i was downloading from knife.

Check your settings. Make sure Limit to 2 files at once is checked in preferences/sending is checked.

when we unchecked that during a long download it stalled everything.

and you've got the ventures christmas album (@320 no less). how cool is that. :tu:

we've got to fix your share thing.

multi 25-06-03 08:49 PM

got your key in greedy..

good 1 jade and drax..looking forward to having a chat sometime..

even on dial up left it on 24/7
it reconnect straight away..
staying connected to it..is what sort of keeps it together..

i dont think pod has disconnected once from this thing..:) well not that i remember..

i sometimes leave for 4-5 hrs now and then..usually to sleep or go out..
but i think if ppl are out getting stuff on another app..they should be able to feel free to ask someone on waste to abort a download for a while..(i mean we are all friends here..) and sometimes timing can be bad...;)
then send that file back so it resumes..or goes in that users queue when they have finished getting the file from one of other networks..

but nicking off to grabs stuff is ok too the persons file will resume the moment you come back..

theknife 25-06-03 08:57 PM

greedy - walk towards the light;)

Drakonix 26-06-03 12:25 AM

Thanks for the reports.

I looked at the preferences/sending/limit setting and it was unchecked. I have it checked and at 2 now.

Try it again.

Edit:

Looks like that was it! the knife is downloading from me now.

Drakonix 26-06-03 12:44 AM

Hmmm. something still amiss if you see Ventures Christmas songs at 320.

The only Ventures track that is actually 320 is Hawaii Five-O.

The Ventures Christmas stuff is VBR or 128. Maybe waste is mis-interpreting the VBR files as 320.

relic 26-06-03 01:26 AM

welcome new users...enjoy the music.

JackSpratts 26-06-03 01:31 AM

I read this thread, but think I'm missing something: can't connect!

Drakonix 26-06-03 03:13 PM

I have your key in now, try to connect.

Type waste.drakonix.org (or another IP in this thread) in the box at the top of the network status window. If the network status window isn't open, you can open it by clicking on the icon on the upper left of the main waste window just below the "File" menu item.

PM me or someone in this thread for the network name if you do not have it.

Thanks to all who helped: I've now got a connection.

hi taz, welcome to the napsterites p2p-zone! you can start your own network up in no time - many members here have, and you'll find it a lot more reassuring when the people you connect with are known to you personally.

get the program out to 1 friend, exchange ips, name the network (or don't - it's optional) and get connected. spread the word to those you especially trust and before you know it you'll be experiencing secure environment p2p. it’s an interesting feeling. :tu:

hi taz..welcome to the forum!

sorry u didnt like it dawn :(
anybody....that uses it, i was wondering what ppl have seen in it that needs to fixed/improved(i will try and compile a list of stuff to post somewhere they are makeing upgrades to it..)

so what would be good in this program...?

being able to swarmload the same file from different users ..sort of goes with out saying...

being able to pause dowloads is another obvious one..

more accuracy in thed/l u/l speeds would be nice..

having any existing chatrooms show up in the main window when you first connect like the users do..
instead of 2 hrs later...:)

i have spotted a few more ...but cant think of them right now....

pod 28-06-03 11:24 PM

Could everyone go to their options under File Transfers, and check the 'Try to bring up direct connection' option? I think it's off by default. Unless you'd rather not do that, of course :p

JackSpratts 28-06-03 11:52 PM

getting swamped? :D

i've been doing that for over a week. i notice it says "try to bring up direct connection..." i guess it isn't always able to. but i wonder if that's because both parties have to choose the option or if something else interferes, like firewalls maybe.

- js.

pod 29-06-03 06:38 PM

Heh, sort of. I don't really mind, and Waste is capped anyways so it doesn't become a problem (that's why my speed says 'slow dsl' :). But unless you're specifically paranoid, you'll get better speeds (and more reliability too I bet) if you check it.

I think it says 'try' because it depends on several things. Probably both users need to have the option selected. Firewalls are another thing. Then you need to have each others keys.

Mazer 07-07-03 09:47 AM

1 Attachment(s)
This is weird. It seems like my computer is trying to send the files but they're timing out on the other end so I keep getting new transfer requests. Maybe my 56K modem doesn't like two simultaneous uploads to the same user. In the meantime it's monoploizing every last bit of my bandwidth even though nothing seems to be going through.

goldie 07-07-03 10:03 AM

Maze, first try aborting any transfer that's not active.

Second, try aborting the duplicate transfers and leave only 1 active ul see if that clears it up.

You may also have to shut down waste then reopen again to see if it sticks - no worries though, it'll resume.

goldie 07-07-03 03:00 PM

1 particular nasty problem i see with waste

if you've done some housekeeping in your shared folders - waste takes foreva to show the changes, regardless of whether you immediately rescan your folders or not!

Don't like that much at all.

multi 12-07-03 12:13 PM

did you try just having this ticked while you were doing your sorting...like rescan every 10 mins or something..?
dont know if it would help ..thought it may of been for for something like you were saying..

Ðiego 14-07-03 03:23 AM

Kriz look over your settings. Make sure you're listening. Then have your friends key and IP and he yours and connect to eachother. Then add more people by doing the same.

Everyone on the network should maintain at least two connections to the network.

Ð :S:

multi 14-07-03 06:29 AM

hi kriz..
one of you must not have a firewall running..and use that ip to connect to..if u have a firewall on
if u using xp turn off the firewall thats on by default maybe..if you dont seem to running one..

start with no network name/ID
decide on one after you all get connected

kriz-o 14-07-03 02:13 PM

thanks

i will try that, thanks a lot.....
