Gates' confirmation won't be a walk in the park. The Dems probably won't embarrass themselves like they did in Ashcroft's confirmation hearings, but they won't allow a quick confirmation unless he says certain things about his intentions. It's a chance for Dems to play a little hardball before this session ends and they officially take control.

Don't know alot about the system over there,but it seems to me,that to start playing politics,is the last thing the people would want.

Gates seems like a reasonable choice to replace Rumsfeld, imo. coming from that Bush 41 circle who thought taking Bagdhad was a bad idea the first time around, he's not likely to be keen on the idea of prolonging the occupation.

almost of equal importance, he has argued for direct talks with Iran - something Bush 43 has refused to do. it's a good time to replace belligerence with pragmatism in our foreign policy - Gates seems to be a good candidate to do that.

and speaking of belligerence, this should also be the end of John Bolton's chances to become permanent UN ambasador. :W:
